A new use for wrpr.us I just came up with!!! (Fist personal post
too, but still kind of an update)

So while visiting Ashburn, Va (Data center ally) I needed access
to my network, but Wireguard was acting up for some reason... BUT
I remembered a cool tool I found a while back; Drum roll
please... SSHUTTLE!!! to the rescue. So far it's reliable, fast
and easy to use. So from now on if any user of wrpr.us needs a
quick VPN just shoot me William (Linear) a msg on IRC, email or
even mail me on the wrpr.us minecraft server (new plugin alert!)
and just tell me your intended use so I can keep track of what
comes across the network.

So whats up in Ashburn?

I'm here for some amateur boxing and not much else! I've also
wanted to come up here for a while just to see all the data cen-
ters. I once thought about data-center engineering as a career
path, still might. BUT the reality of seeing these things, it on-
ly cements my beliefs on small scale hosting and self hosting.
It's kind of depressing really. Behemoths of concrete and steel,
nearly devoid of life and seeing the backdrop of the Appalachians
really has a dystopian cyberpunk feel. I've called those moun-
tains home for 10 years now, the fresh air, wild life, the sense
of comradery and friendship among a community smaller than the
occupancy of the hotel I'm staying at. All juxtaposed with this
cold, isolated place of uncaring wires and monuments; it really
makes me feel a little uneasy.

I used to believe that due to my surroundings of barely any peo-
ple and a slow internet connection that I wanted out, back to the
city where I belonged, where I can have a career that mattered.
But several Maciej Ceglowski talks and just about all of Luke
Smiths videos and blog posts later I've changed my tune. I've al-
so realized internet speeds aren't everything, taking it slow has
benefits after all, just don't try consuming movies everyday (un-
less torrenting and keeping local backups lol).

Another Install, Another Day

Currently I'm playing around with configs and still thinking
about switching back to Void. Last week or so I reinstalled
Alpine and decided to keep WRPR.US as simple as possible; so
I've made a simple check list. -- 1. Do I use a program? 2.
If I don't use one, could I? 3. What are my goals with
WRPR.US? (1. Have a small pubnix for myself and friends 2.
Have fun 3. keep it simple, if you want complexity, the
wider web has enough of it 4. Actually use it) And now for
some must haves -- 1. My shell BBS 2. Gopher/Gemini (Maybe
one, maybe both) 3. Messaging (Was IRC, now it's XMPP, in
future who knows) And for my one extra, A community game
server, currently running a Minecraft server, but it's not
Free Software so might switch to something like Veloren. I
just like the simple lighthearted nature of older Minecraft.
Really symbolizes what the web should look like (Credit to
Maciej Ceglowski, In one of his talks he compared A
Minecraft like web future to a CoD like web future.)

Other Site Stuff

1. Currently need to update the gopher intro paragraph and
Tor/I2P links. (Might hold off because of a Distro hop.)

2. I like Void and Alpine, Just Void feels like a smoother
long term experience. I've already had to wipe Alpine due to
some weird update stuff I couldn't figure out; plus I've had
a few years of daily driver experience with Void.

3. Mirrors, not sure if I've mentioned this before but
thinking about hosting some sort of repo or mirror + git
server for software I use.

Long time no see, almost a month later daily driving Gentoo, fix-
ing connectivity and debating wrpr.us vs linear.codes.

First off I have switched to Gentoo and it's not the leap I was
expecting in a daily driver scenario. The biggest change in how I
use my system isn't emerge/compile times; rather my approach to
packages and their dependencies. Typically I like to run a small,
minimalist system, keeping focus on what I need to get stuff done
and nothing more. Now Gentoo really has changed my approach to
minimalism, with how extensible and informative portage is. On
previous installs I never stopped to appreciate all the portage
con fig files and use flag versatility. 10/10 Really recommend
running Gentoo if you have the core power, it's extensible, sta-
ble, fast and powerful...

I might make an encrypted install guide some time this week. Al-
though the handbook is great for a standard install, it's lacking
cohesion with the full disk encryption guide. For example, timing
and configuration, like how to properly configure grub and when
should you install grub, or things like genkernel over dracut. I
would have appreciated a straight forward guide on genkernel +
grub + full disk encryption. I know every system is different, so
maybe this will end up being more install notes and pointers than
a full guide.

linear.codes vs wrpr.us

In other news, moving towards a full self hosted home-lab model
means I no longer need my VPS. Now the decision I need to make is
should I keep linear.codes. Pros: linear.codes is a pretty cool
domain name, and I already use it for email and a searx instance,
but not much more. Cons: it's expensive... 50 bucks per renewal,
now I know it's like a donation thing but still 50 bucks? wrpr.us
is like 5. I'll probably wait till next year, pay the renewal fee
and wonder if it's worth it again.

Slow posts and expectations

It's already been a more than a month, and more than a couple
weeks since I started writing this. Updates and posts are slower
and less than what I thought I would output. I haven't even made
a personal post, the closest thing to a personal post is why site
updates have been slow due to distro hopping to Gentoo.

Hello, Currently testing Userlog posting, editing and cross-post-
ing across all protocols hosted on wrpr.us. Userlogs as well as
wrpr.us may be gopher exclusive going forward, although I might
allow some limited, personal site hosting on the wider web.
Streamlining the site to be gopher or gemini exclusive would make
userlog posting cleaner, as you only need to make one symlink.
Or even better use gophernicus’s inbuilt user home hosting feat-
ure.

Quick updates and Quick menus

How do you navigate a pubnix effectively, simply and quickly? Do
you let users navigate it like their local system? How about a
simple menu system? Both? I'm guessing both, so I've made a sim-
ple menu and system info script. The main functions are access to
the BBS, Guestbook and ~/Home.

Keeping WRPR.US simple

So... simplicity? Well I've decided to go back to IRC, although
currently the XMPP server is still up. Userlogs have been removed
for now, it was a mess of a script and didn't work well with go-
pher and formatting options. How about Gopher vs Gemini? Gopher
is what's running currently, still debating Gemini. As for the
distro hoping situation, I haven't switched, still on Alpine. And
what about Minecraft? It's easy to keep up and I like it, so it's
still up.

Scope creep and changes

WRPR.US is meant to be a small, experimental community BBS and
Gopherhole/Gemispace hosting site. Although it was mean to be a
BBS the first service that went live was the Minecraft server.
Taking inspiration from other PubNixes like SDF I started adding
features and compounding complexity; leaving too many unused ser-
vices. Going forward I might switch from Alpine and downsize to
the essentials until I upgrade from a couple of RPI's and get
some users.

Now that I think about it, Distro hopping, redesigning and be-
lieving in a better way of operating in the future sounds a whole
lot like Second System Syndrome. Too late for SSS concerns though
I've just about made up my mind on downsizing.

Updates in pursuit of making WRPR.US a functioning site have
slowed down a bit in the past couple of weeks. Mainly be-
cause after my Void Installs boot partition corrupted, I de-
cided to install Alpine on my main machine. Distro hopping I
know... But I couldn't resist after my experience with
alpine on the WRPR.US Raspberry Pi.

Anyway where I like to compile most everything on my system
Void was convenient with a nice balance for custom kernels
and suckless software, while using Void's amazing XBPS for
binaries like Firefox. Now this brings us back to a deci-
sion, continue on Alpine and continue to learn abuild and
aports, go back to ole faithful Void OR make the jump to
 Gentoo.

I've used Gentoo for only a few months at a time, about the
same length I've dabbled with OpenBSD. Every year I install
and use Gentoo but always find my way back to Void, but this
year I think it's time. Only thing that stands in my way is

Updates Updates and more changes

Back Into The VOID!

After some debating and a few weird errors with Alpine, I've de-
cided to go back to Void Linux. Although I love both, Void feels
more like home. I've used it longer and am more familiar with
XBPS. Now my issues with Alpine; Apk has some weird update behav-
iors, like new confs. Basically a non issue, but Apk does have
better, more up to date packages. Now on to stability, every few
months I would encounter some weird networking issues on Alpine,
something I've never experienced on Void in my years of use...
TLDR; I distro hopped, both Void and Alpine are about equal and
interchangeable. Who knows maybe I'll try Gentoo on the Pi's
next.

Minecraft? Minetest? Both???

I've been running the Minecraft server for a while now, and The
Minetest server has only been on and off for about a week while I
experiment with it. So far I like really like Minetest, except
for just one thing... It feels super uncanny, like some sort of
weird future infdev Minecraft. I've heard the some advice similar
to that given to MS Windows to Linux converts "Treat it as it's
own thing". And that's solid advice, still feels a little weird.

As for the future of the Minecraft server, I feel like I should
commit to one or the other. So here's where I stand 1. I don't
like Micros*ft 2. I don't like modern Minecraft, The only reason
why the server is on 1.8.8 is because that's the oldest version
supported by Paper. 3. Minecraft is what I know and have played
for over 10 years. Now for Minetest 1. I've always liked the
Project but never really got into it. 2. As I said before, it
feels uncanny. 3. Love the simplicity and mods.

Currently the plan is to run both, but in future potentially
choose one or the other. Minetest will most likely win out be-
cause of its free nature. But I might keep the Minecraft server
up just because of the time I've played on the wrpr server.

XMPP? IRC?

Since the migration I shut the XMPP server down, I like IRC more
and there's no need for 2 chat servers. I might bring it back
later, but for now it's just IRC.

Or even better use gophernicus’s inbuilt user home hosting feat-
ure.

Minecraft server stuff

I decided to switch from Minecraft 1.6.4 to 1.8.8. The main rea-
son I switched was server side performance, and it's still before
the dreaded combat update. At least 1.8 still had Notch involve-
ment. :( I also switched to a paper mc server over the stock Mo-
jang one (Better performance with paper). Also in the process of
adding some quality of life mods, like warps and the such.

Wrpr.us will also be getting a Minecraft section with some
screenshots and other things maybe!

Only thing that stands in my way is
configuring yet another system... I should've made my own
 LARBS like script by now.
