AAHHHH Too many Changes!

I can hardly remember what changes I've made!

I'll just make a list with some of the bigger changes:

 (1) Personal Git at git.wrpr.us ‐ Doing git things with
 git

 (2) A SearXng Instance at searx.wrpr.us ‐ My favorite
 search engine

 (3) No more users, making wrpr.us more personal

 (4) Pinebook Adventures (Armbian img available at wrpr
git) ‐ more form this to come!

 (5) Also working on a netcat based text wall

 (6) And much more!

As for the more personal thing - I've decided to
take wrpr.us in a more personal direction. My reason-
ing behind the switch was time, ease of use and fo-
cusing on what I actually use. Especially after I
dropped my VPS with Vultr and Linear.codes, I might
re-purpose linear or something later. As for some of
the services hosted here the only big change is shell
access will be more restricted and git is locked for
 personal use for now.

 Gopher? HTTP?

In my search of simplicity and minimalism; I am
torn between the ease of access of a static site gen-
erator and HTTP. Just one, one thousand pound gorilla
in the room -- I HATE MARKUP LANGUAGES. I feel like a
need a paragraph to print a good looking, well for-
matted sentence! I might make a super simple HTTP
static site generator to mimic the syntax Gopher or
Gemini uses, maybe make some sort of conversion tool
 to mirror the Gopher site.

It's been about a week since I wrote the last
paragraph; I'm now testing out Phroxy and Pygopherd.
I like the idea of hosting a Gopher proxy, since
Phroxy has been archived I might start maintaining a
fork if I use it. As for Pygopherd, currently Geomyi-
dae has been great, I just like the web interface
that Pygopherd provides. You can find an example over
 at quux.org.

 PineBook Stuff

Do you have an original PineBook? Is Armbian no
longer working for you? Or do you just want a differ-
ent Debian distro to try out on your PineBook? Head
on over to git.wrpr.us today and clone my Armbian Im-
 age!

I might make it another server or some interface
thing for my Pis, I just want to actually use my
Pinebook for something other than small projects and
OS tinkering. Virtual machines are more useful for
tinkering anyways. I might make a recurring series
 of PineBook projects, we'll see.

 Wrapping up

It's been way too long since the last update, I
would like to log changes as they come, so I'll end
this update here and publish more as I work on things
 coming up!

Another Install, Another Day

Currently I'm playing around with configs and still thinking
about switching back to Void. Last week or so I reinstalled
Alpine and decided to keep WRPR.US as simple as possible; so
I've made a simple check list. -- 1. Do I use a program? 2.
If I don't use one, could I? 3. What are my goals with
WRPR.US? (1. Have a small pubnix for myself and friends 2.
Have fun 3. keep it simple, if you want complexity, the
wider web has enough of it 4. Actually use it) And now for
some must haves -- 1. My shell BBS 2. Gopher/Gemini (Maybe
one, maybe both) 3. Messaging (Was IRC, now it's XMPP, in
future who knows) And for my one extra, A community game
server, currently running a Minecraft server, but it's not
Free Software so might switch to something like Veloren. I
just like the simple lighthearted nature of older Minecraft.
Really symbolizes what the web should look like (Credit to
Maciej Ceglowski, In one of his talks he compared A
Minecraft like web future to a CoD like web future.)

Other Site Stuff

1. Currently need to update the gopher intro paragraph and
Tor/I2P links. (Might hold off because of a Distro hop.)

2. I like Void and Alpine, Just Void feels like a smoother
long term experience. I've already had to wipe Alpine due to
some weird update stuff I couldn't figure out; plus I've had
a few years of daily driver experience with Void.

3. Mirrors, not sure if I've mentioned this before but
thinking about hosting some sort of repo or mirror + git
server for software I use.

The ever present distro temptations

Hop Hop Hop... I've had multiple temptations surrounding my
choice in OS over the years. Just a small fraction of which
was logged in the update section. As of now I run Gentoo on
my main machine, Void on one of the RPis running wrpr.us and
Debian/Raspbian on the other two pi's. Although I'm counting
this iteration of these thoughts as distro hopping, it's a
little different. For years now, at least a few times a
year, I play with the notion of creating, publishing and
maintaining a Linux distro.

Now you might be thinking "We don’t need anymore distros" or
something along the lines. Which is why I've never fully
committed to the idea, but now might be different. I see
projects like Kiss Linux and Crux Linux and love their sim-
plicity, I see what Nix is doing but simultaneously see the
drama in the Nix community, the lawsuits surrounding Red hat
and the spending habits of the Linux Foundation. So I can’t
help but think 'Why can’t it be better?'

What exactly is better? in my opinion of course

 (1) Focus - A project should focus on it's absolute core
values. All software, hardware, standards, licenses
and the such are all tools meant to be used. Not per-
sonality traits, not vectors for political action,
not for activism, etc. Unless a tool was designed
for something (like activism) leave it alone. The
NixOs fiasco really got to me if you couldn't tell,
it’s a Linux distro calm down.

 (2) Kernel - This Idea might be a Fork of one of the big
3 BSDs, Instead of Linux. But will most likely be
Linux for now, just because I'm more familiar with
the kernel. In short we’ll see, I don't intend on
 rushing development.

 (3) Minimizing - I really love the Kiss software repo
bloat idea. Keeping the main repo a small list of
high quality, vetted, stable software to keep the
base system running would be ideal. And lets be hon-
est - this will make any endeavors in maintenance
 easier.

Kinda forgot about this post, going to post what I
have anyways. Had a lightning strike, needed a new
router, had some more networking issues after. and
had a busy July. Anyways, the idea still stands, I
might make a distro or something like a meta-distro.
Who’s knows - it'll probably end up being more of a
personal project instead of something meant for any
 serious production.

Long time no see, almost a month later daily driving Gentoo, fix-
ing connectivity and debating wrpr.us vs linear.codes.

First off I have switched to Gentoo and it's not the leap I was
expecting in a daily driver scenario. The biggest change in how I
use my system isn't emerge/compile times; rather my approach to
packages and their dependencies. Typically I like to run a small,
minimalist system, keeping focus on what I need to get stuff done
and nothing more. Now Gentoo really has changed my approach to
minimalism, with how extensible and informative portage is. On
previous installs I never stopped to appreciate all the portage
con fig files and use flag versatility. 10/10 Really recommend
running Gentoo if you have the core power, it's extensible, sta-
ble, fast and powerful...

I might make an encrypted install guide some time this week. Al-
though the handbook is great for a standard install, it's lacking
cohesion with the full disk encryption guide. For example, timing
and configuration, like how to properly configure grub and when
should you install grub, or things like genkernel over dracut. I
would have appreciated a straight forward guide on genkernel +
grub + full disk encryption. I know every system is different, so
maybe this will end up being more install notes and pointers than
a full guide.

linear.codes vs wrpr.us

In other news, moving towards a full self hosted home-lab model
means I no longer need my VPS. Now the decision I need to make is
should I keep linear.codes. Pros: linear.codes is a pretty cool
domain name, and I already use it for email and a searx instance,
but not much more. Cons: it's expensive... 50 bucks per renewal,
now I know it's like a donation thing but still 50 bucks? wrpr.us
is like 5. I'll probably wait till next year, pay the renewal fee
and wonder if it's worth it again.

Slow posts and expectations

It's already been a more than a month, and more than a couple
weeks since I started writing this. Updates and posts are slower
and less than what I thought I would output. I haven't even made
a personal post, the closest thing to a personal post is why site
updates have been slow due to distro hopping to Gentoo.

Hello, Currently testing Userlog posting, editing and cross-post-
ing across all protocols hosted on wrpr.us. Userlogs as well as
wrpr.us may be gopher exclusive going forward, although I might
allow some limited, personal site hosting on the wider web.
Streamlining the site to be gopher or gemini exclusive would make
userlog posting cleaner, as you only need to make one symlink.
Or even better use gophernicus’s inbuilt user home hosting feat-
ure.

Gopher stuff

I've been messing around with Gopherproxy (The one from
gopher.mills.io); instead of Pygopherd so I can keep Geomyi-
dae as my main gopher server software and have easy http ac-
cess for easy sharing. Also will probably use the Gopher
edition of Stagit alongside of regular HTTP stagit for con-
tinuity.

Solar??

A small solar powered Raspberry Pi hosting thing would
be pretty cool, in my opinion. Maybe make some sort of off
grid system for long range LoRa to internet thing. Like a
server that sends updates over the air in the middle of a
field, or some remote radio astronomy stuff, like an array
of some sort? More realistically this would be somewhere
with limited connection to send very limited text updates to
a remote location with broader connection capabilities to
post on the wider web. Like a super slow cabin logging sys-
tem that can post to my favorite plain text protocols! And
possibly receive text based updates, like news, weather and
the like.

Now thinking about some sort of field station/server/re-
lay/radio thing almost like some sort of intractable thing
straight out of Death Stranding or something like a Cyber-
punk data term. I'm envisioning something that looks like
Anduril's Pulsar system, but instead of radio based defense
it’s an easy deploy‐able, long range, nearly off‐grid commu-
nications system. With the current geomagnetic storms and
talk of a magnetic pole shift; a system that is somewhat
shielded from such events might actually prove useful some-
day too.

Journaling?

The Netcat text wall needs some sort of real purpose...
Currently guessing it will end up being a simple public
journal. Although resetting, simple paste service might be
interesting too.

what about Minecraft? It's easy to keep up and I like it, so it's

Updates Updates and more changes

Back Into The VOID!

After some debating and a few weird errors with Alpine, I've de-
cided to go back to Void Linux. Although I love both, Void feels
more like home. I've used it longer and am more familiar with
XBPS. Now my issues with Alpine; Apk has some weird update behav-
iors, like new confs. Basically a non issue, but Apk does have
better, more up to date packages. Now on to stability, every few
months I would encounter some weird networking issues on Alpine,
something I've never experienced on Void in my years of use...
TLDR; I distro hopped, both Void and Alpine are about equal and
interchangeable. Who knows maybe I'll try Gentoo on the Pi's
next.

Minecraft? Minetest? Both???

I've been running the Minecraft server for a while now, and The
Minetest server has only been on and off for about a week while I
experiment with it. So far I like really like Minetest, except
for just one thing... It feels super uncanny, like some sort of
weird future infdev Minecraft. I've heard the some advice similar
to that given to MS Windows to Linux converts "Treat it as it's
own thing". And that's solid advice, still feels a little weird.

As for the future of the Minecraft server, I feel like I should
commit to one or the other. So here's where I stand 1. I don't
like Micros*ft 2. I don't like modern Minecraft, The only reason
why the server is on 1.8.8 is because that's the oldest version
supported by Paper. 3. Minecraft is what I know and have played
for over 10 years. Now for Minetest 1. I've always liked the
Project but never really got into it. 2. As I said before, it
feels uncanny. 3. Love the simplicity and mods.

Currently the plan is to run both, but in future potentially
choose one or the other. Minetest will most likely win out be-
cause of its free nature. But I might keep the Minecraft server
up just because of the time I've played on the wrpr server.

XMPP? IRC?

Since the migration I shut the XMPP server down, I like IRC more
and there's no need for 2 chat servers. I might bring it back
